There is a little application called File Manipulator that generates droplets that can rename files recursively -- as well as perform a number of other actions.

You could check it to see whether "professional" renaming is faster than scripting, though I would guess that FM droplets are nothing but scripts in disguise. Running it on 2000 files and folders took about 30 seconds.
