I don't think there's a way to either select them or position them on the "desktop" proper, only in the Desktop folder's window. I noticed that my OS 9 scripts that cleaned up the desktop wouldn't do anything. Tried a few mods and no luck so just forgot about it. Not sure why this was done in this way (could have had two different entities, one for the window, one for the "desktop"), but there you go.
