Yes, that's intersting : things have changed with Panther. But maybe the list disks command should have changed too to ensure the compatiblity between the two systems...

Thanks Thomas

I really wonder why this command has changed since Jaguar...

Because there are now (at least...) two different mechanisms for mounting
volumes.

I don't know the real reasons behind the differences, but the results are
obvious enough. For example, if I type in "afp:/at/server_name:*" in the "Go
to server..." box, I get a disk visible on the desktop and ejectable from
the Finder window sidebar, and listed in /Volumes.

But if I *browse* to the same server, through "Local", and double-click to
connect, it doesn't show on the Desktop or the Finder window sidebar, and
can only be ejected from its icon in the "Local" folder, and isn't listed in
/Volumes

The first shows in console.log as:
Dec 11 10:15:45 localhost kernel: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount: /Volumes/server_name,
pid 24028

The second as:
Dec 11 10:17:27 localhost kernel: AFP_VFS afpfs_mount:
/private/var/automount/Network/Local/server_name/share_point, pid 3252

/private/var/automount/Network/Local/ appears to be a list of available
servers. From the Terminal you can
ls /private/var/automount/Network/Local/server_name
...to get a list of mounted shares.

Can anyone else explain *why* there are these differences? I'm guessing it
starts with the Rendezvous/AFP discovery process, but don't see why the
final connection method should be different.

Nigel
