I4m using the print dialog to create an postscript file.
I can, on another machine, simulate an printer by using a script called
"postscriptfile". This script let4s me create an virtal printer spooler and
then I share this printer by Panther shareprinting option.
For more info about this script, check:

The filesystem is MacOS Extended, I think. I4m using the default when
installing Panther.

It depends...

What file systems are involved? Mac OS Extended or Standard? UFS, NTFS...?
How are they being copied? How are they being moved? Finder? Unix shell?
All of these things are factors which affect file type/creator.
