Intolerance as in Trent Lott, Jesse Helms, Richard Nixon's southern
strategy (continued by Reagan & both Bushes in their campaignsremember

primary that John McCain had fathered a black child?), the Louisiana
Klansman who ran for office as a Republican in the 1980s, the
Department of Justice under William Bradford Reynolds (when employees
of the department were often heard telling racist jokes in the
hallways), the McCarthy period (when people lost their jobs & sometimes
their lives due to their real or perceived beliefsnot their actions),
the College Republicans (so rabidI speak from experience, having met
them in collegethat a Republican fundraiser called them "Hitler
Youth")?
Creatures like these deserve all the condescension anyone else can heap
on them.
Loony as in former Republican representative Helen Chenoweth (who
believes that the New World Order will swoop down on the U.S. in black
helicopters & who supported the militia movement in the 80s); the
anti-abortion activists who set up phony medical clinics to which women
seeking abortions have been lured to be subjected to gory films and
extreme pressure tactics in an effort to force them to continue their
pregnancies; Ronald Reagan's statement that trees are a major source of
air pollution; Reagan's statement that the Vietnam War was a noble
cause (contrary to overwhelming evidence to the contrary in the
Pentagon Papers & elsewhere); Reagan's visit to the SS cemetery at
Bitburg; a pre-emptive, unilateral war based on transparently phony
claims while al-Qaeda is still running around loose & whose recruiting,
according to the CIA, has gone through the roof since the invasion?
