Get thee into perl or MacPerl if you're not into OS neXt yet.
Pascal->perl == trivial.
Pascal->AppleScript == many things to be unlearned on the way.
A spreadsheet - Excel - would make your sorting process easy. AppleWorks can probably do it and it is considered scriptable though I don't know if it has a text-to-columns function which will split out the dots. Excel and AppleScript get along only in conjunction with Excel scripting in VBA which is more than you want.
