'ping' [*] is a specific term. I do get your meaning...to monitor the disk.

Folder Actions.
I just tested a Zip disk: attached an action to alert me on additions (you
could do whatever you want...copy to another location you said) and am able
to eject and reinsert the disk and retain the attached action (by name, I
suppose, so watch out for duplicate named disks.)
(It's pretty cool to be able to attach to a removable volume's folder.)
You will have to keep the disk's window open (but you can tab that so it's
out of the way. If that'll work for you.)

If you have OS9, then you have a folder of Folder Actions in your Scripts
folder. Copy one of the 'add - blah blah' scripts and open it, edit as
needed to make your copy take place.
