Thank you for all the help.
I had tried most of what was suggested before even writing in, and I
think the reason I couldn't make it work consistently was the fact that
when a successful "open for access" occurred then some error
afterwards, the file was left "open" so that the next "open" failed.
This loop persisted to frustration and I wrote in. I appreciate the
ideas about double-checking file closing and have implemented with
success.
I note that my query about Write to file was not only answered but had
spawned another whole thread (checking if variable is defined) all
between midnight when I posted and 10 AM when I checked for email.
Should I worry about the collective mental health of posters to this
list? Where do y'all live that all this could happen in the middle of
the night?
