Entity Marc K. Myers spoke thus:

For reasons no one seems to understand, file sharing on my OS X 10.2.8
G4 tower (466MHz) keeps turning itself off.
That was a problem in 10.2, fixed in 10.3. Unless you repair disk
permissions, then the entire sharing prefpane goes to default (apparently).
In 10.2 every reboot would turn off sharing. There was a hack to turn it on
at startup involving a shell script in the "StartupItems" folder but that's
all I know.

This doesn't happen when I reboot or wake from sleep. It happens in the middle of doing nothing! I'll be off using my iBook on the wireless connection and doing a file share with the machine in question. I'll release the volume and when I come back to get it later I find that I can't share files from the desktop machine. When I go to check it in System Preferences' File Sharing pane the checkbox next to "Personal File Sharing" will be checked but the text over the "Start" button will say "Personal File Sharing Off". If I click on any other item in the list and then click on "Personal File Sharing" the message changes to "Personal File Sharing On". At that point I can share files again.

I get a message on the console log that reads: "System Preferences[9185] ### Error:268451843 File:FileSharing.m Line:324". I've been unable to find a reference that tells me what that means and I can't locate a file on the system named FileSharing.m.
