I know for a fact that Apple engineers relocate their home directories.
The technique was described on the Carbon list a few months ago by one
of them (George Warner I think). The advantage is that it enables
starting up with different OS versions in different disk partitions but
still have the same home folder. Plus it makes for a centralized place
to access and backup data like email and code.
