Thanks for that suggestion. Definitely worth a go.

Oh well, perhaps someone else on the list could enlighten me on the 'raw'
constant values. I'm running for 24 hours straight now on most occasions, so
at least what I've got is a definite improvement on the OSAX workaround. The
problem now tends to occur when restarting the script app without re-booting
the machine. (DOGGEREL ALERT) Even then, a call to NSS that just gets the
un-interpreted value of the activity constant usually seems to clear the
problem (END DOGGEREL ALERT)

and you will find several excruciating attempts to do what you are trying.
Thanks also for the archive link. I've never been able to search them
before, possibly because the link from the applescript users page at
http://www.lists.apple.com/mailman/listinfo/applescript-users says:

the spam e-mail harvesters. To access the archives, please use:

Whereas the correct user/password from the link you gave me is "password'
Yup, there are indeed many posts on the subject. Much obliged to you and
understanding now why there's not a lot of people responding on this topic
now...it's all been done to death before I joined the list.
Thanks again to Rachel, Emmanuel and others who've helped me with this.

p.s. If anyone on the list could confirm my techie doggerel questions I'd
still be most interested.
