Typically, this trick is accomplished by checking the HTTP referrer, user agent, a cookie, by making the image the result of a POSTing, or more rarely by checking historical traffic from your IP. You can script UAS or argument curl to account for these tactics. I've had success doing this with sites that shall remain nameless.
