Thanks Sal, all that is excellent and you can imagine the power and
possibilities if the following specs applied to OS X.
"At present there are 3special2 or 3virtual2 printers, and some generic
3pre-filters2.
Print Preview
From the Print Dialog, you can select to look at a preview. For this, the
print file is passed through filters which make it suitable for displaying
on screen using KGhostView.
Special Printers
Amongst these additional features are a few special9 or virtual9 printers:
These special printers may:
Print to PDF
Convert your document into a PDF file with the help of an external program.
Print to email
Send your document as an email attached PDF file.
Print to PS file
Save your document as a PostScript. file.
Print to Fax
Send it through an available backend, such as Hylafax as a fax."
Unfortunately this is part of KDE Linux interface while in our world we
still need this nasty user click on a button to produce PDFs.
In search for a solution I asked Till Kamppeter <email@hidden> the
following question:

is it possible in CUPS to define a "special" printer that all it does is to

Probably also a PPD file for a generic PostScript printer works.

But my system consistently refuses to accept "pdf:" as method in the lpadmin
line.
