I don't know absolutely anything about 'grep', but I'll need it sooner or
later. My first question is: any simple tutorial on grep usage?

The best and most straight-forward tutorial I've seen comes as a text file included with the text editor Tex-Edit Plus. It's clear, concise, and had enough information that I was able to get some simple grep statements working.

On an even more OT note, Tex-Edit Plus is a very fine text editor.
