AppleScript Documentary

No, It's not on PBS. Jane Goodall is not involved. And, no, you won't see the grooming and eating habits of AppleScripter's up close!

What I'm speaking about is just an idea. If I want to know something deep and dark and rare about Applescript. I don' t look for documentation. That would be pointless and foolish. I come here. This list's members are the best source of information about AppleScript on the planet. But it's not very accessible. Some of the members of this list work and eat and sleep when they could be answering questions!

Many of us could explain (and do, again and again) the TIDs function and use. But is there even a FAQ? No! Why not? Wouldn't it be nice if you could say...Go to http://www.macscripting.com/applescript/documentation/ textitemdelimiters/ and be done?

What I suggest is that someone (TBD) operate a geeklog* powered AppleScript site that functions as a way of making documentation and discussion available continuously. See macosxhints.com as an example. Implement a user-based rating a-la slashdot and you've got something really useful. Someone on this list knows all about some application's scripting implementation. That knowledge was earned by virtue of suffering and anger. But if they share it, they get to redeem a bit of that,
I know many people will respond by saying 'Great idea. You go set it up.' Well, someone on this list knows a lot more than I about geeklog, and someone is already running one. I'd be glad to participate, but maybe using this forum we could find the abilities and capacities within this group to create a new one (orthogonal to this one of course!)

So, Who would like to be able to go to the 'ApplicationName' tag, search a hypertext dictionary for a command and find battle tested code and discussion as to implementation and perils? I would!

It appears that those who are implementors are already discussing the way some of this should work in the language. (Re: Dictionaries was Re: Scripting Mail:get selection). Apple couldn't put together the knowledge and experience that is available in all of YOU regardless of the number of engineers and writers they threw at the idea. You are the users. You are the elite experts in the field. Share your knowledge. But technology could make it much more useful, maintainable and beneficial. Again and again I've read posts saying that the one really powerful thing that AppleScript has is a community that shares and helps very readily. I suggest we leverage that.

So, any thoughts? : )

*Or similar application. I'm log-agnostic.
