Running AppleScript code from the Terminal?

Greetings.
I've been goofing off with the Terminal lately, and it occured to me
that it would be nice to be able to make the Terminal beep or speak when
one of my scripts wanted notification. Then it occured to me that it
might be even nicer to be able embed AppleScript code in shell script.
Is there any way I can do this? Thanks in advance for any help anyone
can provide.
Note: If what I want is not possible with existing programs, anyone who
wants is free to write something to make it possible.
