Barbara, Rob et al....

After some further fiddling -- I discovered that the following simple script does indeed work on my machine:

tell application "SpeakableItems"
activate
end tell

It was just a matter of searching for this mysterious speakable app and spelling it correctly etc....

Also, after discovering that this worked, I deinstalled the System Events 1.2 beta, went back to 1.1.1 and the same simple script works there again also. While not exactly lightning quick...(no, i didn't time the two scripts ) it does activate the Speech Recogntion module / Feedback window without bringing up System Preferences windows, dialogs buttons etc... and therefore it runs successfully no matter which options/prefs have been previously selected.

Thanks however for your helpful script, nevertheless. I have saved it for education in general scripting of GUI elements. It will be quite useful to me, in that regard.
