URL Protocol Messaging

  • Subject: URL Protocol Messaging

As Bill Cheeseman mentioned, the URL Protocol Messaging is for easily transferring script snippets and examples from web pages to the Script Editor.

Although formatted examples can be displayed in web pages, they are often copied with characters and spaces missing making it necessary and difficult to debug the script before successfully compiling. URL Protocol Messaging will solve this problem and greatly improve the ability to share scripts and to create inter-active AppleScript instructional materials.

Regarding security: under NO conditions will a script execute automatically. There is no "RUN" action parameter and the Script Editor will not respond to one. The available actions are: NEW, INSERT, and APPEND.

URL Protocol Messaging is used throughout Mac OS X by various Apple services and applications. The new Script Editor will be another Apple application that takes advantage on this architecture. Examples of others are here:

Regarding using third-party script editors with this protocol:

We are examining this issue to provide a correct efficient method for setting a third-party app to be the target of the URL protocol.

Thank you for your continued support of AppleScript!

Sal
