Why are you using 'selection' at all?
I'd say this is a a legacy of learning AppleScript from recording the Finder
in OS 9. Since it records what you are doing, it records the selecting of
the file, and then the changing of the file name for the selection. It's a
big step for novices to move from using the selection to referring directly
to the objects.
Novices also seem to want to code how they work in the Finder and other
applications. They want to open folders before they get to the the file they
want to work on, or they want to choose menu commands. I am sure the new
user interface scripting is going to allow people to not look at the
underlying scriptability of applications, and just script the user
interface. Of course there is the other side, where developers don't make
their applications scriptable and rely on user interface scripting instead.
User interface scripting has been quite handy, but its introduction may have
some bad consequences.
