I have provided code for doing this in my AppleScript Sourcebook report
series on new versions of AppleScript, since about AppleScript 1.6 -- maybe
earlier. Check out the AppleScript Sourcebook link below, and navigate to
the AppleScript chapter, then read each report. Most reports have a
subtitled section devoted to versioning. The code has change periodically to
deal with bugs in the versioning calls for AppleScript and other issues that
have arisen over time.
