Interestingly, yes. The creator of MetaCard was a unix geek who had the sense to look at HyperCard back in 1990 and say, "Unix needs something like that." Then he went and created it.

Of course, he added full color support, a full set of interface widgets, and about 1000 extra commands for everything from regular expressions to associative arrays to easy internet connectivity. And he left out script length limits.
