A wild guess only...

Some native apps in OS X do not bestow on their own chirren a file type
as it was known in pre-X. If you do an 'info for' a given file and the
file type is a 'missing value', then the parent app is likely at fault...

As for a remedy? Beats me.

Just another negligent dad.
