Is there a script or an application to synchronize two Palm Desktop
files on separate computers?
Take a look in the Help for the description of the "File:Merge..."
command (open Palm Desktop Help from the Help menu, then search for
"Merge" -- it should be the first item found). It synchronizes data
between two user data files.
Palm Desktop was originally Claris Organizer, which supported synching
long before HotSync existed. It was intended for, e.g., someone who has
a desktop machine and a portable, or someone who shares their calendar
with an assistant who can also make changes.
If you need to make changes in two different locations and synchronize
them, Merge is what you want. If you only intend to change data in one
place at a time and copy all the data to other locations, then just
copy the entire User Data file.
Now, theres a bug here: You may run into problems if you add a record,
Merge files, then HotSync one of those files. To do this right, if you
create a new record, youll need to HotSync first before Merging that
record with another file.
The reason for this is that when you create a record it is given an ID
number to uniquely identify it no matter how you change the record
contents. When you sync it to another file with Merge, that ID is used
to keep track of the record. However, Palm OS handhelds also assign an
ID to new records when you first transfer them to the handheld with
HotSync, and this replaces the original ID assigned by Palm Desktop.
So, be sure to HotSync first, to have the handheld assign an ID, then
you can Merge that record into other files using that ID.
If you dont do this, you may end up with two copies of the record,
each with a different ID, and changes to one wont be synced to the
other.
