Brant,
I believe Sandi's is at v1.2 and not available for OSX. Not authoritative
info, however.
However, you describe the kinds of action that System Events is supposed to
allow in OSX. Perhaps you should be looking there.
I do not use X, but from all I've read is a KeyQuencer-like tool for
controlling the interface: pushing buttons, pulling menus, activating
pop-ups, typing text and the like. [*]
Best of luck.

Whether the System Events 'click' command (or equivalent) takes a point or
an element name, I don't know. When GUI manipulators only work on element
names or numbers, it depends on the implementation of that interface as to
whether the name of an element is revealed in a standard way.
Meaning, some obstinate Mac programs -- like FileMaker for instance (and
sadly..and strangely since it "came from Cupertino" -- don't implement
pull-down menus in the standard way, according the AHIG and other
guidelines, so they are not, therefore, accessible except by more tedious
and clever means...such as 'click at X,Y' ... 'drag to X,Y' and the like.
I mention this because you said this was a Java application and my
experienced -- limited to be sure -- is that the GUI elements are
masquerading as true Mac GUI elements and are terribly difficult to
reference in standard ways.
