I replied to Stephen privately in more detail, mainly to state that because the password I use for the vpnclient is based on a Securid card there is little to be gained (if anything) from being able to determine what the password is ... except within a minute or two of my login.

This also means that the use of the Keychain is not possible, because the password is continually changing.

It would be better to accept the username and password from stdin though. That would eliminate that security flaw and make the technique applicable to static passwords as well.
