Not really, but practically speaking, you can run lots of little programs without noticing any performance degradation. Big programs consume more resources, like memory and disk space. Little programs consume less, so you can run a bunch of them.

Personally, I'd leave the Internet Connect application open after scripting it and close it manually when you feel like you are done with it. It's simpler in the script and easy to use. If it's visually disruptive, have your script hide it.
