Scripting Mail to go forward and back

I would like to use Apple's Mail program to do something that some
other mail programs do: namely, I want to be able to go to the previous
message, and the next message, while in a message window (not while
looking at a message in the Preview pane at the bottom of the list of
messages). That is, I want to double-click a message, read it, and then
(by some keystroke, triggering an AppleScript) go to the previous
message, and (by some other keystroke, triggering another AppleScript)
go to the next message.
Problem: I need help finding out how to tell Mail to go to the previous
(or next) message.
All of this would happen within a single mailbox. Also, it doesn't
matter to me whether the previous/next message is unread or not. I just
want to be able to go there by a keystroke.
Naturally if there is a secret keyboard shortcut for going to the next
message I'll be glad to use it. But I haven't found one yet.
Thanks.
