Bob,
I've got no problem dropping aliases to Smile, or to an alias of Smile.
You didn't say which OS version or which Smile version, so pardon the
9-ness...
OMM, when an application stops resolving aliases, a quit and relaunch of
that app usually helps, but if not, Finder restart (or full restart) almost
always fixes the problem (which must be memory related, and most probably VM
related).
If not, then I would check (in order):
- broken alias (but why no warning?), make a new one and try anyway
- bundle bit of Smile (use File Buddy or Bundle Banger to toggle it) [1]
- init flag of Smile (use File Buddy to toggle it) [1]
- desktop rebuild
- disk error in catalog tree (Disk First Aid, Norton)

[1] Lower right corner of FB Info Window are these flags. Even if they are
"checked" I usually uncheck them, update the info, then check them again.
This used to be called "bundle banging", which apparently became a great
past-time in the days of System 7 and has remained a hobby of millions. :)
I don't know who wrote the drop-app called 'Bundle Banger' and I don't have
a copy any longer (maybe on some floppy in the closest), but I used to love
that little tool.
