Uh, so you can call AppleScript from a Unix context. Do you really need an
example? I've got some great ones, such as a Ruby word-histogram script
that graphs its results in Excel... m.
I see no no point in calling Applescript from a Unix, or even a
MacPerl context and never have done. Apart from osascript there are
also Chris Nandor's Applescript/AE modules for perl, which are
written by a man with a pathological aversion to Applescript --
without which he would have seen it was a waste of time,
If Applescript is the prime mover, then the shell/perl/AS combination
can be precompiled and run fast. If you approach the thing "back to
front", then it's not only a pain but it's slow and ugly. With
Applescript/AE in the driving seat, it's just a question of (very
quickly) writing the shell routines to files with Read/Write commands.
Nobody from the AS hating community has ever provided me with a
cogent counter-argument -- they simply bear their teeth and say
things like:

If you share this attitude, why not get Pudge's stuff and really
waste some time and effort.
