Unless there is an automated way to select the messages, it's probably easier to right-click (or control-click) the selection and choose "Mark as read" (or "Mark as unread") from the contextual menu.

This presumes that all the selected messages have the same read status, because the contextual menu's read/unread item is based on the first message of the selection.
