Opinions, guidance, wisdom, hard-and-fast rules all appreciated...
Under what circumstances does one decide to go ahead and rely on a call to
an addition instead of perhaps a longer or less elegant, but 'pure', method
that can be achieved with AS standard installed components?
Especially if a script is intended for distribution. Even if the osax is
freely distributable, but would require an "install" (which, as we know in
this case, means "drop" mostly), do you think users are less likely to give
it a go if they have to "do something" other than double click? (Yes,
obviously, any perceived 'obstacle' is an obstacle, but...)
If the tool is distributed with the script, then perhaps that's easier to
swallow for a user than if they need to download from some third-party
location?
I'm guilty of installing almost anything to try it out...and perhaps this
self-selected lot shares some of that inclination, but what about Jane User?
Or Joe Network?
Thanks in advance for your experience and advice.

P.S.
Given the recent post about some common extensions not having made their way
to X yet, what would you say are the extensions that have a very high
probability of already being installed. (I think I had 7 copies of Progress
Bar on my drive at one point!)
