I'm sorry to hear that many feel "do shell script..." Is an acceptable
alternative to osaxen.
Although I see an advantage in expanding AppleScript range thru use of UNIX
commands -- I'd personally rather pay a few bucks than delve into a whole
new language - for stuff that ran flawlessly under OS9.
Unfortunately, learning a second language (let alone one not nearly as
intuitive as AppleScript) removes much of 'ease-of-use' factor from AS.
Don't get me wrong, I occasionally use terminal -- but it would be a mother
of a job to rewrite the hundreds of AppleScripts. (Virtually all of my
scripts would require a rewrite if Jon's Commands didn't exist for X)
This of course is from the perspective of someone who primarily writes
AppleScripts for personal use. I CAN see an advantage where distribution is
concerned.
On the other hand, I'd be much more hesitant to run someone's AppleScript
which contained shell scripts than pure AS (where a quick read makes the
function obvious).
Just one (lazy?) persons opinion,
xandra
