Steve, as for doing something worthwhile for this 11 year old, why not
one of those Java apps *for kids* that let you build visual cool apps
without writing code? I think it's important he'll be able to get results
quite fast. Actual codewriting, he can do later when he realize what type
of things one can actually do with programming.
The most important thing for such a young person is IMHO *not* getting
proper syntax or whatever, but getting anywhere and be "bitten" by it. I
suggest that you don't let your personal views on programming get into
the way of the formation of ideas for such activities with this young
person. Try to keep an open approach and guide, assist and help him in
any way you can by giving him the overall picture as detailed as he seems
to be interested. Then let his interest in what to get into be the guide
for yourself.
