I am going to do something really foolish: add my 2 (euro) cents.
As a beginner. Not an Apple Computer beginner (we go back, maybe, almost 20
years? - Apple Iie). I was not supposed to be a _complete_ AppleScript
beginner either, but l am beginning to feel like one.
What I mean is that I _a lot_ of the AS stuff that I tried to learn from,
written by Danny Goodman, Bill Briggs, and others, and that includes a whole
lot of stuff by Sal Saghoian, simply does not apply anymore to what AS seems
to be. Or where it seems to be going - from my rookie perspective.
Oh yes, the tao of basic programming - yes, so many nice people in this
list, they are always ready to help. But more and more, I am getting this
feeling that things are quite broken.
Sure, I find GUI scripting very cool. I love Bill's UI Browser. I actually
think it is kind of a lifesaver - Apple's own UI browser crashes my 10.2.4
system. But seriously, most of the applications I came to rely on for my
daily work, I can't access the vast majority of UI elements (and I won't
drown this list with questions.)
Many of the scripts I've been collecting (leftovers from older Mac OS's)
don't work. I labeled them pink (using Unsanity's LabelX). My AS folders
have a whole lot of pink files.
Perry's AppleScript book is filled with "this may not work in MacOS X" and
the like.
I used to know how to do folder actions in MacOS 9. It was cool, except
(without 3rd parties) you had to have the folder open. Just that. In MacOS
X, folder actions are a bit of a puzzle to me.
And the most basic way to learn, was for me to record Finder actions in
MacOS 9, and see what came out in the script. OmniGraffle sort of lets you
do a little bit of that, so do a few other apps. No more.
What this all boils down to, is, I see Chris Nebel and John Delacour
exchanging resentful emails, and, even if both have been educational and
helpful to me, directly or indirectly in the past, I can't help but
empathize with John. Most of the little I knew about AppleScript is gone.
Every other application there is always some issue. Then there's this
Cocoa-this, Cocoa-that. Then many, really, of the scripts I download from
Apple's own site, I can't get them to work.
I really fear that AppleScript is not on a very steady course - but I would
really, really want it to be, because I want to learn and use it, because I
need it for my daily work.
So this is a bit of a suport for JD's position, but also support for CN, in
the sense that AppleScript needs to get evidence of lots of support from the
masses.
And no, I won't be filing any bugs, I don't have the technical capacity for
that. So I respect those that take their unpaid time to do it - and I can
understand their frustration. They are doing this on behalf of all others -
including us beginners.
Thank you guys,
And sorry for this long post.
Mike C.
