Scripting color depth change in Mac OS X

Is there a way to script changing the color depth of the screen in Mac OS X? I have a need to launch a classic application within Mac OS X, but it needs to run with 16-bit color. Previously, we have launched this app with an AppleScript in Mac OS 9, and were able to change the color depth there.

I'm not sure that GUI Scripting is the answer we're looking for right now, at least until it is considered "final" by Apple.

Thanks!
