Here (OS 10.2.1) if I launch Script Editor (not SE2) or Smile and I
attempt to read 40 MB out of a file whose size is 580 MB, AppleScript
crashes. (memmove - glp)
This is a bug of AppleScript, maybe it's fixed now, I don't know.
If I read, e.g., 20 MB, and then I attempt to read 40 MB, I get a
mere memory error (both in SE and Smile).
