how do I read values in a dropdown( ie pop up button) list out?

I want to script an application that has dropdown selection lists
implemented using "pop up button" elements. The pop up button then has "menu
item" elements.
1st :
I need to be read out the possible values in the application's list..
2nd:
Once I have found the one I want, tell the application to select that item.
Any examples on how to do this?
