BOSTON APPLESCRIPT USER GROUP "BAUG" MEETING
The Boston AppleScript User Group will be meeting on Tuesday,
March 25 at MIT Building E51, Room 372 located at the corner of
Wadsworth and Amherst Streets one block off Memorial Drive. Parking in
the lot on Hayward Street after 4pm for free. See link to map below
for details.
AppleScript is, among other things, a very powerful, full featured, and
modern programming language. Under the right circumstances it absolutely
crushes any idea that any other programming or scripting language on any
platform would have any chance to compete against it. This month we crush
some bad ideas- Basic, C++, Java, you name it, we crush it.
Leveraging the enormous development investment, time, and user experience
that has gone into off-the-shelf software products Adobe InDesign and
FileMaker Pro we demonstrate a web-based, variable data, print production
system built with AppleScript. Users from remote locations make selections
in FileMaker database from which an Adobe InDesign document is built.
Using a couple thousand lines of AppleScript, a half dozen professional
programming techniques, and six weeks of work a surprisingly intelligent
application has been built. It evaluates the elements on a page and will
make size and location decisions as well as line by line typographical
adjustments to fit text to meet certain rules defined by the graphic
designer.
FileMaker Pro has been scriptable since there's been scripting, version 2,
and in version 6 it is old reliable. The surprise is Adobe InDesign. In
six weeks of scripting there was not a single negative issue
to report. Its scripting functionality is clearly defined and fairly
well documented. Furthermore, if you 1) love OS X and who doesn't,
2) are tired of being held back on OS 9 by obsolete page layout programs,
and 3) you work in PDF workflows for print production you should check out
this solution. It's a great way for print production professionals to begin
integrating OS X into your systems.
Shirley Hopkins has donated two copies of her fantastic book "AppleScripting
InDesign". This book is well written and begins with three chapters of
introduction to AppleScript. It continues for 16 more chapters full of
excellent text and examples of how to AppleScript Adobe InDesign. There is
a CD that accompanies the book containing all the examples. If you don't win
a copy of the book, I can't urge you strongly enough to buy it if you are
beginning to learn to AppleScript Adobe InDesign. It will save you a couple
of days.
Beginners are encouraged to attend this meeting and bring your questions.
