Usual problem. It ought to work and probably did in OS 7.6.
Certainly, it works on 9.0.4 (folder "Extensions" of folder "System
Folder" of startup disk of application "Finder")
However, in sys 7.6 - 9.x, if/when the Finder dies then it's touch and
go whether you can cleanly carry on. In X, you can relaunch the Finder
with impunity, ease and indifference, because System Events and the
Finder (which used in effect to be entangled before X) are now separate.
On the whole, I prefer not having the death of the Finder hose the
system.
I do find it interesting that when some scripters (self included) first
discovered that one could script System Events directly - back in the
10.1.0 days, I think - and reported so back here, Chris N said that
doing so was deprecated because S.E. could change and wouldn't
necessarily be exposed. Now it seems, through UI Scripting, that SE is
being exposed rather a lot.
And BTW, Chris N, gotta new job? What's "Apple Development Tools" about?
