how do I find out if an application is active?

Simple newbie question-

I want to have another script that tells that application to quit if it is
actually open..

I have found that just doing

ignoring application responses

tell application "blah" to quit

end ignoring

actually activates the application if it wasn't open!

I know I have seen syntax around along the lines of:

if application "blah" is active then

tell application "blah" to quit

end if

but what I have listed there isn't quite right.. I get an applescript error
on "is active"

can anyone help me w/ the correct syntax?

Thanks

Jennifer
