I am a programmer, and I know that Shane is on the money. Word doesn't work well with AppleScript simply because they don't care to make it work.

Sure, it's an effort, but it is one they could make. The file format has nothing to do with scriptability. Cross platform aspects don't matter. They just need to make the decision to implement it and it will happen. Until then, it's VBS (Very Bad Scripting).
