AppleScript Language Guide (ASLG)[1]. That's what I'd use if I were you. Any
of the commercial books are fine for illustrating the basics, but there's no
standout.
Also, make sure to supplement the ASLG with a search on this list's archives
for 'AppleScript's text item delimiters' and read up on that.
