Right, so this is why 'contents' was a poor choice! Too bad you couldn't run a beta past us folks that will actually be using this. :(

As always, please let Palm know that Mac OS and AppleScript support are important to you so Palm knows where to apply their efforts. (Yes, I work at Palm, but I don't speak for the company, so I refer to it in the third person. ;)

I did test the scripting support as best I could, with the help of some others who also wrote example and test scripts, but we didn't hit this case. Luckily, although it's a little confusing, it's not ultimately harmful.

Another problem I'm seeing is that script editor doesn't quit properly after I've been targeting Palm Desktop. I have to force quit, but then if I try to relaunch it, I'm told that it is 'in use'. (OS 9.1).

I can't imagine how this could be a problem with Palm Desktop specifically.

Also, if you tell Palm Desktop to activate when it's not running, and it launches, it doesn't come to the foreground until after it has finished launching. Is this correct/desirable? Other apps don't behave this way.

I don't think this is specific to Palm Desktop, although it does have a bit of work to do before it's ready to handle the activate event. At least on Mac OS X, if I 'tell app "foo" to activate' several apps I tried finished starting up before coming to the front.

I thought using the generic 'contents' property would simplify things, but it seems that this creates a potentially confusing experience, since it's different from other properties.

Er... any chance of changing the terminology again?

Probably not soon enough to stop irritating you :) I'm certainly thinking it should probably be changed, but as it happens I am no longer officially working on Palm Desktop. It is now owned by PalmSource, and I work for Palm, Inc. So there's no guarantee I'll have any influence on what happens.

Please let PalmSource know that Mac OS and AppleScript support are important to you, to help focus their efforts.

Now, horror of horrors the original script is not working at all:
...
When I put in a complete path to the package file, it compiles and works
fine. (Just to restate, this is under OS 9.1 with Applescript 1.8.3)

It may be that you have an old copy of Palm Desktop around and Script Editor found it. Although, 'memo' was supported in 4.0, so I really don't know what happened to you. AppleScript is funny that way.
