The startup disk, the whole startup disk, and nothing but the startup disk

I've played with a good bit of Applescript and a little bit of UNIX. Here's
something I want, but haven't been able to get.

Is there any UNIX way to say ("/" except for "/Volumes") that will be as
universally acceptable as Applescript's "path to startup disk" ?
