It's funny but I've had to do the opposite at one time where someone
insisted I send them a Word document because they wouldn't accept
anything else. Well I didn't have Word and I wasn't about to buy it
just for them so I saved the document as a plain text document using
BBEdit and changed the extension ".txt" to ".doc". Word opens up
documents like that just fine and the person was never the wiser. Of
course doing the reverse and renaming a ".doc" document ".txt" doesn't
work quite as well!

Seconded! It happened a pair of times already that I ask people to
convert their Word documents to text (ASCII) files before sending them
in, and what I got was ... the exactly same Word (.doc) document but
with the extension changed from ".doc" into ".txt".
