It's funny but I've had to do the opposite at one time where someone insisted I send them a Word document because they wouldn't accept anything else. Well I didn't have Word and I wasn't about to buy it just for them so I saved the document as a plain text document using BBEdit and changed the extension ".txt" to ".doc". Word opens up documents like that just fine and the person was never the wiser. Of course doing the reverse and renaming a ".doc" document ".txt" doesn't work quite as well!

Oh boy! You are not working in the land of Office and PC. No way you could make them write anything else but MSWord. And if you tell everybody to write text only most of them will not understand what you mean.

Seconded! It happened a pair of times already that I ask people to convert their Word documents to text (ASCII) files before sending them in, and what I got was ... the exactly same Word (.doc) document but with the extension changed from ".doc" into ".txt".
