Problem as root with Mail.app

Hi all,
If I try to launch the script "Create New Message" from the script menu
in Mail.app
the script doesn't work if I'm logged as root, it doesn't insert the
recipient in the
"To:" field, also it use a wrong account.
Has anybody experienced this behavior?
Using Panther 10.3.1 logged in as root.

P.S. [OT] as root I can't set the number of recent items that is always
set to zero
and the menu is not present.
