application version

In OS 9 I used to find the version of a particular application by

set appVersion to (version of file appFile)

however this does not work for me under OS X.
I tried

set appVersion to version of (info for file appFile)

but info for does not have a version number.
I would be grateful if anyone could help.

John Cochrane
