Giga is a DECIMAL unit understood throughout the whole world to be 1e9 = 1,000,000,000 (10). If you assume that 1024 (10) is the same as 1000 (10) you cause confusion that we simply don't need in the world today. 802.11b runs at 2.4 GHz, not 2.4 gibiHz, and the 0.4 is not one half. It is four tenths.
Even Apple's own system profiler recognizes the problem now and offers both calculations though it still refuses to use the gibi abbreviation.
Yeah. I know. If the ancients had only ignored their thumbs we would have a base 8 system with all of its advantages. But they didn't and we're stuck with it.
