There is more than one built-in ftp on OS X. The Finder handling of
ftp volumes is, as has been brought up, read-only, which is just
one of the bugs in how the Finder treats various kinds of network
volumes. Another one is that the Finder is likely to crash (and
bring down the rest of the GUI) if the mounted volume becomes
unresponsive. The command-line ftp is very nice, and worth getting
to know (it's built-in). It can do a lot more than traditional
ftp cli tools. Also, there are curl and wget; I see that curl is
in /usr/bin/curl on my machine, which means that it probably came
from Apple; wget came from fink.
