There still are! QuicKeys is available for OS X...

Prefab's Player also does this in pre-X systems. I don't think Player is destined to be ported to X, especially now that UI scripting is built in. But UI scripting needs to fill out the feature list to include all of the widgets that Player does. Player has been exceedingly useful to plug holes where applications didn't support some particular funcion in AppleScript that needed to be done. It has excellent documentation too.
